An atmospheric evening in Athens
A rare rainy day in August, followed by a break in the weather in the evening; I rushed into the centre with my trusty 50mm lens to try and capture some sunset shots. Initially, the light was very flat - there wasn’t much of a golden hour - but as the sun dipped, the light reflected on the clouds, making for stunning colours all round.
Above: the Acropolis as seen from Thiseio - before the sky caught fire
The sky on fire behind the arches of the Irodeio (Odeon of of Herodes), the ancient marble theatre still in use today.
Below: streets of Plaka, dusk / last light.
As the light finally faded, I decided to experiment with long exposures in a couple of spots; I’m pretty happy with how they turned out and really like how they blend the modern city with historical sites, such as the ancient Arch of Hadrian and the marble Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held.
